QUTANG GORGE Kuimen Gate is at the western tip of the mouth of Qutang Gorge. Chijiashan borders it to the north and Baiyanshan to the south, which like two huge gates. The cliffs force the water into a narrow strip, in places only several dozen meters wide. Kuimen Gate is a symbol of the Three Gorges and was called the most magnificent scenery under heaven in ancient times. Baidicheng, Suited on the top of Baidishan Mountain to the northern shore of Qutang Gorge, the town has a history of 2,000 years and there is a wealth of historic sites of the Shu Han period (221-263), along with numerous stone tablet inscriptions. The famous poets - Du Fu, Li Bai, Bai Juyi and Su Shi - visited the town times in their life and left a legacy of writing in praise of the historic town, which has became a city of immortal poetry. WU GORGE Wushan County, Situated at the northern end of Wu Gorge, it has a long history dating back to the Spring and Autumn Period. It was named Wushan in the Sui Dynasty. Visitors to the county can view the clouds and rain at Wushan Mountains, the Lu You Cave and the features fo Fairy Peak. Lesser Three Gorges, The Daning River, the longest tributary of the Three Three Gorges, joins the Yangtze River at the western tip of Wu Gorge and flows from north to south. It is well reputed that Lesser Three Gorges are not the Three Gorges but better than the Three Gorges. XILING GORGE Nanjing Pass , It is the eastern gate of the Three Gorges. Steep cliffs stand on both shores and the waterway is narrow. The terrain is strategically situated and difficult of access which was bitterly contested in ancient history. Sanyou Cave, This beautiful cave is in the northern Peak of Xiling Mountain, 10 km northwest of Yichang. It overlooks a deep valley and the steep cliffs are hundreds of meters high. It is warm in winter and cool in summer and dotted with stalactites. Poems and essays by many celebrities abound in the cave. CHONGQING Dazu Stone Carvings, The stone carvings at Dazu, to the west of Chongqing, are the most exquisite representatives of the stone carving in China in the late period and they are best preserved and on a grand scale. They are chiefly Buddhist statues, but there are also Confucian and Taoist statues. The carvings occupy a very important position in the religious, artistic and cultural history of China. They are listed as world cultural heritages by UNESCO in 1999. Ghost City in Fengdu, The 'ghost city' is situated in a famous mountain close to Fengdu Country, Chongqing. Legend has it that this is the cave residence of the King of Hades. The place has reflected the 'ghost culture' and its cultural implications since ancient times. It boasts beautiful natural scenery and many places of interest and cultural relics.
WUHAN Yellow Crane Tower, it was built on top of Snake Hill, Wuchang in the early Three Kingdoms Period and is one of three famous pavilions south of Yangtze River. |
